John Stoutoak
By Mira Oberholtz

As John reached into the soil, he found the embrace of the Earth both warm and welcoming. Burrowing down, he found himself half-buried, unable to move.

But John was a smart fellow and, feeling a little hungry, he extended his fingers farther into the Earth, hunting for nutrients and enough water to whet his thirst. Then, missing the sun, he spread his toes and encouraged them to sprout into branches, leaves. And then, as the cold night set in and his skin hardened into a stout bark, John resigned himself to his fate and became a strong and rigid oak.
