Firepriest Ethers
By Mira Oberholtz

“How long have you been there, Henrietta?”

“Too long.” Henrietta sighed, disentangled the tentacles of the ether squid from her ear.

“Any word from Desmond?” The other woman sat down beside her on the braided, circular rug. All around them, the dome temple seemed to stretch on into misty eternity. Henrietta shook her head.

“It’s been really quiet.” She pulled in a shaky breath. “He hasn’t been in the ethers for days.”

“I’m sure he’s safe.” The other woman pulled Henrietta into a gentle hug. “He’s a firepriest. They’re trained to be tough.”

“But this is war, Margreta.” Henrietta looked up, moistness playing at the edges of her eyes. “Its designed to kill people.” She looked away again. “And he’s out there in it.”
