Red Giant
by Randal Schmidt

It is a strange feeling
To stand on the precipice
At the end of all things
With the scorched sea
Stretching endlessly before you.

Salvos thunder in the distance
Beyond time and imagination
Into heaps of desiccated dead,
Leathery skinned demons
Bake beneath our colossal star.

In the infinite expanse
Through vacuous systems
The immensity of silence
Is deafening.
