Love At World’s Edge
By Amanda Firefox

“Jeriah.” I whispered, but the sound fell on ears that refused to hear. “Please.”

“You don’t know what you’re saying.” He shook his head, bared too-sharp teeth, teeth that held the promise I was looking for. Please. Behind him, the portal shimmered seductively. “You have a life here, a life now.”

“It doesn’t matter.” I put on my bravest face. “I love you, Jeriah. I want to be with you forever.”

“If I take you with me, if you enter into the layer of the Worldream,” He hesitated on a breath, caught somewhere between concern and fear. “You will become one of us. You will never be able to return, you’ll never see your family again.”

“I know.” I reached out, traced the line of his cheek, wanting suddenly to kiss him, to be kissed, to be wanted, needed, whisked off through the portal and into the lands, the worlds between worlds where Jeriah and the others like him wove magicks into the fabric of all the realities that bind and flow through the collective universe. It didn’t matter the cost, it didn’t matter what I had to give up, my time, my world, my family, my existence. . . all that mattered was Jeriah, my love for him.

“Only the dead can enter the Worldream.” He whispered, and I closed my eyes, because I knew and it didn’t matter. Only the bite can save me. Jeriah’s bite.

“I’m ready.” I said softly, gently craning my neck to the side, taking a deep breath as he hesitated. “A life without you is no life at all.”
